Dear John:
I just received your letter and the article - we will include the
reference in the final copy of the proposal when we submit it
formally.
Thankyou again for agreeing to consult with the project. It does
look like a good cast, as you put it.
I am sending a copy of the proposal to Max and to the following
people at NSF:
Dr. D. Don Aufenkamp, Head, Computer Applications in Research
Office of Computing Activities
National Science Foundation
800 G Street
Washington, D.C.
Dr. Howard Moraff, Director, Techniques and Systems Program
Computer Applications in Research
Office of Computing Activities
National Science Foundation
800 G Street
Washington, D.C.
Dr. Kent Curtis, Head, Computer Science and Engineering
Office of Computing Activities
National Science Foundation
800 G Street
Washington, D.C.
Kent Curtis's section seems not to be appropriate for this proposal,
but since Max knows him, perhaps he would be willing to give us
advice.
The NSF describes the Techniques and Systems Program: " Supports
research which converts the advances in computer science to new
computer-based methodologies for research. Possible projects include
interactive techniques, on-line and real-time systems, hierarchiccal
computing, and other applications of recent development in computer
and communication technology". It certainly does seem to be the slot
for our proposal, I hope that they feel the same.
On the evening of Thursday, March 28, I will leave for Colgate
University where I will see Max, then to Washington the next week to
talk to Moraff at NSF, and then to Berlin. I hope to return to
Stanford for a month this summer in order to finish a piece I had
hoped to complete this winter (as Dick Moore pointed out, better to
try and get support for the project than compose my last piecce at
Stanford).
Should you have any suggestions after my departure, please contact
Andy Moorer at the A.I. Lab, extension 4971, (415) 321-2300.
I hope to see you in the summer or next year.
With warm regards to you and Ellen,
John M. Chowning
